Our show results

The boys are too young to go into the ring at the moment, but, as we did with Harvey, we're hoping that they will both enjoy and be good at showing.

STOP PRESS AGAIN!!!!*******RICHMOND CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW - Plum is placed 2nd in Limit Bitch and then goes on to WIN THE RESERVE CHALLENGE CERTIFICATE (handled by Dawn)....well done PLUM BOB SQUARE PANTS*****************

Well, December 2007 was the first day we went to see Dawn for our first lesson in preparing the boys for showing. As puppies, they needed their puppy coats stripping, so we spent a couple of hours with the expert and trying it out ourselves! It does take a lot of work and clearly is something that needs some time and attention and a lot of learning! Keep posted for their first 'show' pictures!

The next two pictures are of the boys after we'd seen Dawn for our first session of hand-stripping. They do look different already (although maybe hard to see) and of course, look very cute!

Archie (at 18 weeks)...

And Angus (relaxing....at 18 weeks)...

So after trying our first hands at stripping their coats and before we are starting ringcraft classes in a couple of weeks, we are also trying to get them used to the 'show table' and standing for the judge. I think you can see the difference in them at the moment, but we know now what we have to work on with each of them so they show their best.

Here is Angus...

And two pictures of Archie (he stood still for longer than Angus!)...

RESULTS

So.....here we go, aged 6 months and 1 week, the boys were entered into their first show!!!! The first show was the Midland Cairn Terrier Club Limited Show, 1st March 2008.

For ease of reference, the boys KC names are:

Carradine Maybe the Moon at Harkinleigh = Angus
Carradine Night Listener at Harkinleigh = Archie

--------------------------------------------------

MIDLAND CAIRN TERRIER CLUB LIMITED SHOW - 01/03/08

MINOR PUPPY DOG (4 entries)

2nd - Carradine Night Listener at Harkinleigh
3rd - Carradine Maybe the Moon at Harkinleigh

A superb first ever show result from the boys - we were extremely proud of them both. Although excited and very 'energetic', they behaved as you would expect two 6 month old terrier puppies to and that's what counts! We had some great support and reassurance (thank you to Dawn and to Helen) and watched some Carradine Cairns do fantastically well too.

They were very tired coming home, but we all really did enjoy the day - that's what it's all about.

So....here's looking forward to the next show....watch this space!!!!!

Our first championship show was the National Terrier Club on Saturday 5th April. An early start awaited, leaving London around 4am and arriving in Stafford at 7.45am.....into the hall and we set up the boys in their pens. The wait for their class began...

We looked at the catalogue and knew there were 4 dogs in their class. We were incredibly nervous - we'd shown before with Harvey, but this was the first time at a Champ show with Archie and Angus. They were incredibly well behaved (weeing everywhere as usual!) and we brushed them a couple of times before entering the ring, at 9am, the first dogs in. Here is Archie being 'prepared'!!!...

Minor Puppy Dog class and here are the results.....

--------------------------------------------------

NATIONAL TERRIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW - 05/05/08
Judge: WH Cammish

MINOR PUPPY DOG (4 entries)

1st Carradine Night Listener at Harkinleigh
2nd Carradine Maybe the Moon at Harkinleigh

OH YES!!! Archie was placed first with his brother right behind him (both in and out of the ring it seems!!!) in second place. We just couldn't believe it - we looked at each other and beamed. This really was the best start to their showing that we could have wished for and we haven't actually stopped smiling yet! The boys were excited in the ring (but what did we expect?!) but showed really well and we were bursting with pride after this success. It was just incredible and they are now both qualified for CRUFTS 2009!!!!

Of course, in winning our class, Archie had to go back for the final line up for the CC in dogs (this would have been a little too much icing on the cake to win this!) but it did give us the opportunity to take some pics of him....

And another...

So, Crufts here we come!!! We have a little while to wait of course and many more shows to go to, but this was the best start we could have hoped for. Well done A+A!!!

And here is our first critique of the boys after their 1st and 2nd at the National Terrier Club Championship Show, judge WH Cammish:

CAIRN TERRIERS

After Crufts and the Club Shows I think that National Terrier is the next best one to be invited to judge and I was therefore very pleased to be given the opportunity to judge this prestigious show for the second time. I must take this opportunity to thank my two most able stewards, particularly Ray Smallwood whom I consider to be a steward "par excellence". I found the quality of the exhibits to be mixed with all shapes and sizes and I did feel that many of the cairns were carrying too much weight which spoilt their outline and made them heavy in shoulder. I have mentioned before, and so have other judges since, of the lack of forechest in our breed. A cairn should "stand well forward on its forepaws" and I am sorry to say that so few do nowadays, and so it would seem as if forechest must now be taken out of the equation when judging which I think is very sad for our breed!!. It was pleasing to find no light eyes and mouths generally were acceptable, although quite a few had just borderline scissor bites, not quite level, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt on the day in my placings. I did think that my bitch line-up was exceptional.

Minor Puppy Dog (4)

1. King & Leighton's Carradine Night Listener at Harkinleigh. Nicely balanced cream with good head. Liked his overall appearance. Promising puppy who could do well with more ring experience.

2. King & Leighton's Carradine Maybe The Moon at Harkinleigh. Similar pattern to winner and same remarks apply. Not much to choose between these two.

Here are some pics of the boys practising their table work a few months on from the last pics (now aged 8 months)...

Novice Dog (5,1)

1st King & Leightons CARRADINE MAYBE THE MOON AT HARKINLEIGH – Nice typy dog of 19 mths, lovely bone and well bodied with good strong loin, good quarters which he used, in good coat, would like a little bit more neck and lay back to finish picture, which affected his front movement coming towards me. Very showy.

2nd King & Leightons CARRADINE NIGHT LISTENER AT HARKINLEIGH – 19 mth old, similair type to 1st, good outline, again, nice head and shape, just lacks body compared to 1st. Handled well.
